WordPress 3.0 released the ability to easily customise the menu system. This can be accessed through Appearance > Menus assuming your theme supports it. This allows you to build up a menu system which can relate to categories just like the system I use in my Blog menu above. All from the one Blog you can narrow down the posts that are displayed in a select category, in effect making it look like a separate Blog. Keeping your posts on different subjects on separate pages for easy navigation.

Although there is one problem with this which I have found, and it is theme related. Whilst using the default 3.0 theme, Twenty Ten, when you display a category on a page it shows the Excerpt from the posts and not the whole thing. Missing out page brakes, images, etc. It basically shows a summary of each post in that category although I wanted to display it in full and in the correct format. After looking around for a solution I came across plugins which allow you to customise how the Excerpts work, and more importantly when they kick in! Try installing the plugin Advanced Excerpt. Once you have the plugin activated look at the options for it under Settings > Excerpt. You can change the length of the excerpt to 2147483647 words. Unless you are writing blog posts this large, this will change the category view to show posts in full instead of cutting them short with a “Continue Reading” link. Although it’s not really removing the excerpts, but making them larger, to your readers the effect is the same.
