So you have your WordPress website all set up and ready to rock, but your looking to attract some more visitors to your site. WordPress is naturally SEO friendly but there is a few things which you can do to help the process. I’m not going to go through everything in depth, because you can pay me for that! But below is a checklist which will help you get more quality visitors and potential customers to your website. You will need to be able to install plugins to follow this, but that’s about it. There isn’t too much configuring to do you’ll be happy to hear. Of course there is many other things you can do to improve your WordPress SEO but this is a blog post not a book. If you are looking to take things further, Joost de Valk has some great articles over on his website Yoast.com. So, let’s get to that checklist…

Permalinks - You can edit your permalinks from selecting Settings > Permalinks in the WordPress admin panel. I have mine set to a custom structure – /%postname%/

Install HeadSpace2 – HeadSpace is a WordPress plugin. It’s an “all in one” plugin to help manage meta-data and handle various other SEO tasks. There is quite a bit of options for you to play with, but you don’t really need to change that much. Before diving into the plugin it helps to edit your header.php. Inside you want to look for the reference to wp_title() and change it to wp_title(”). This will give HeadCount full control over your titles. When you get to the settings page (Settings > Headspace) you will see a list of settings you can modify, from Global Settings to Login Pages. Firstly you want to edit the Global Settings. These are settings applied to every page unless you specify elsewhere. This is handy if you forget to add something – these Global Settings will fill it in for you. You can then go into the other settings and apply titles and descriptions which fit the content a bit more than your generic Global Settings. You can even set specific titles and descriptions to posts and pages! To do this, edit (or add) a page or post. Somewhere below the text area you will see a HeadSpace section, simply fill it out to suit your page or post. Simples.

Install SEO Slugs – SEO Slugs is a nifty plugin which will automatically remove stop words from your titles. Install, and reap the benefits – no set up required!

Install Google XML SiteMaps - Yet another plugin which will create you an XML sitemap. You can find the options for it under Settings > XML-Sitemap. Not much you need to do with it, have it create your map and leave it be.

Install SEO Friendly Images – This plugin will tag your images for you incase you forget when you add them. I use the settings %title as the ALT attribute and %title Picture as the TITLE attribute.

Install WP-Super-Cache – WP Super Cache is a, you guessed it, cache plugin designed to speed up your blog. There is quite a few options in this, but you don’t really need to change much if you are not confident – it works pretty well out of the box.

Install Meta Robots – Meta Robots Plugin makes it easy to add meta robot tags to your site. It works pretty much out the box also, but you can configure it if you wish. It will prevent search engines indexing x pages.

Check your headings – This is a little bit more advanced because you need to look at your themes code, but if you are brave enough open up the post.php and page.php templates in an editor and check how the theme uses the heading tags. On your homepage you want your blogs name, but this isn’t true for other pages. You can read more about this in the article Semantic HTML and Search Engine Optimization by Joost De Valk.

If you follow these simple points, you will be well on your way to getting your WordPress optimised for search engines. To take things a bit further you should check out Joost De Valk’s article on WordPress SEO. Have fun!

So, I’ve had a few days to play with the phone and I spent a bit of time looking through review websites and trying out some of my own apps I found randomly. From the useful, to the fun, to the pointless, here is some of the apps I found “worthwhile” for the iPhone 4.

Gorillacam – This is an app for your camera (you guessed it), which gives you a few more features such as a self timer, rapid fire, 3-shot burst and a grid overlay. Once you have used it, it makes the basic camera software from Apple seem inadequate. Give it a try! It’s free.

EverNote – This is a tool used for creating notes (you guessed it again). It lets you add text, images, new pictures from the camera and voice as notes. More than that, it can also be linked in with the location system on the iPhone and you can give your notes geographical locations. It will also sync with your PC, Mac, iPad – where ever else you have it installed! It requires you to sign-up to the EverNote site, but it is free. There is a premium version which is paid in a subscription basis if you want some extra features.

XE – XE is a currency converter. If you have ever used a currency converter website, it’s pretty standard stuff, but the interface on the iPhone app is even easier and faster to use. Again, it’s a freebie!

Google – Google has it’s very own app for searching on your iPhone. It can act as a normal search engine using the keyboard on the phone, or you can speak into it and it does the search! A little pointless if you ask me, but it is quite fun. Especially with a Scottish accent, the results you get are not always correct =p

TonePad – This app lets you create your own music from simply lighting up little circles on a grid. I’ve never used anything like it before! You can share your masterpieces with friends, save them to listen to later, or do what I do and erase the failed attempts. To be fair, you can actually make some interesting tunes from this little app and it’s defiantly worth a shot, even if it is just one of the “once in a blue moon” apps.

Last.fm – “Listen to free streaming radio on the go”. I’ve heard of last.fm before, but I’ve never actually used it before now. If you have used Spotify and liked it, and are a little annoyed that you can’t use it for free on your iPhone give this a try.

FStream – Missing radio on your iPhone? Get this little webradio player.

Shazam – This handy app, among other things, tells you the name of that track on the radio which you can’t remember the name of! When you tell it to start listening, you will see it analysing the song for a few seconds then give you your results.

I decided to bite the bullet and get myself an iPhone 4 as an upgrade to my old iPhone 3g. If you have an older iPhone and you decide to upgrade, the first thing you will notice is the difference in the picture on the screen. The iPhone 3gs has 480×320 resolution with 163ppi. The iPhone 4 however gives you 960×640 with 326ppi. The difference is quite remarkable. Apart from the looks which in my opinion are much better on the 4, you will notice a new camera on the front of the phone! This is for FaceTime, a new way to make phone calls on your iPhone. The old camera on the back has also had a rework, which now has 5 megapixels instead of 3 and a flash! Something which I think really let down the old iPhone – for the price of it and the competitors at the time offering much better cameras it wasn’t a clever move by Apple to leave it out in the 3 models. With the iPhone 4 you now are able to take HD video. I don’t really think that it’s an amazing improvement for a phone over normal recording, but it certainly is a plus at least.

Overall the combination of the awesome display, great new hardware, new camera, upgraded camera and improvements to the operating system it certainly is worth the upgrade fee and pushes the iPhone, in my opinion, to the top of the smartphone market. Perhaps it does have a couple of flaws which have been well documented, such as the reception, I still think overall it stands out from the rest.

Often people want to customise what links are shown in the meta widget. By default when you put this on one of your sidebars it will display Login / Logout, Feeds and WordPress links. I find the easiest way to change it is to actually remove the meta widget from the side bar and use a text widget instead. When you use the text widget you can put in whatever links you like.

For example, once you have activated the text widget onto your sidebar enter the code <a href=”http://www.yoursite.com/wp-login.php”>Admin Login</a> filling in your web address. This will put a little link to allow logins onto your sidebar. Once you have this working, you can build up more links below it using the same syntax.
